car hire damage charges
|
was back in the UK for a week, had a hire car one report of damage to the right side. After two days use noticed damage to lower left side. Called them to report it, filled out accident form on return. They are trying to bill £980 for two scratches, is their much they can do as no longer live in the uk? I think they knew about this as they really pressured me for extra insurance..

Direct Excess insurance4carhire
They'll do it. Never hire a car without it.

joe - you've probably pre-approved it. I know with some of my hires they take 500 Euros (or something) then put it back after I return it.

You'll be fine then mate, they can't take further payments from a cancelled card.

Willy I get it where you sign that you will pay for any damage , parking fines etc , I don't get it how they can take extra money from the card without another pin no being entered.

Joe - don't you read the hire agreement before you sign it! In it it says that you will be liable for any additional costs incurred after you return the car, such as fines, damage, etc which will be charged to your credit card.

Car Hire companies are cunts.
Few years ago the missus booked a birthday surprise holiday to sardinia. On the plane she told me she had booked a Fiat 500 twin air hire car (she knew I had borrowed a mates and found it fun).
When we got there we waited for over two hours and got given something that looked like the old popemobile and had an engine less powerful than a hairdryer.
And they tried to charge us a fortune when we took it back.

I've got often wondered how they get more money off a credit card, you agree the hire fee and punch in your code to authorise the payment of (say) 100 pounds and get a recipt
How do they get the rest for parking tickets etc?
Anyway , hire the car and cancel the card before you return the car works .

I think you're probably buggered. For future reference as On the Ball says lower down, you can take out separate excess insurance which covers this kind of charge. An annual policy is about £40/50, so relatively cheap.

I get an annual cover that costs about £70. It covers the hire firms excess and it means if you go to the states and don't have to pay their stupid charges on top it works out cheap

It's come straight off your credit card.
Avis tried it on with me once - I picked up a car from Heathrow, drove straight up the motorway to Birmingham, and there office was closed. I posted the keys through the letterbox and thought no more of it. Then a £600 debit appeared on my credit card. When I challenged them and asked for pictures, they waived the charge - something tells me they were trying it on. It was a corporate credit card and they probably thought we would just accept it.

Same happened to me with Europa cars. Had a replacement as some prick tail ended me and wrote the car off. Returned the hire car and there was a small scratch about an inch long on the rear bumper. Cunts went straight to the insurance company and charged £270 for the repair. I had £250 excess so would have paid the extra £20 to keep it away from the insurance company bastards. Got a similar car worth about £1K more than the one written off, my insurance went from £220 pa to £920. Asked why and it was because of the "claim" against me, ie the insurance had to pay out £20!!!!!

I used to work in a car body shop. Biggest scam ever this accident on hire cars lark.
The firms make more money out of these claims than they do with the rentals. Its like a lost leader. Your better off taking full cover or not hiring.

''I think they knew about this as they really pressured me for extra insurance.. ''
And yet you think someone hit the car like Cholo and fucked off
Clever people these hire firms, have crystal balls too
Babel, not trying to be a smart arse but look, you hired a car, did not cover the insurance and returned it damaged. What you really want is advice on how to knock the hire firm for damaging their car

Well said. Never through the car hire company. There are several websites that offer insurance for the excess, and it's well worth getting.
